Within the project\u00a0FDMentor, a German Train-the-Trainer Programme on Research Data Management (RDM) was developed and piloted in a series of workshops. The topics cover many aspects of research data management, such as data management plans and the publication of research data, as well as didactic units on learning concepts, workshop design, and a range of didactic methods.
\nAfter the end of the project, the concept was supplemented and updated by members of the Sub-Working Group Training/Further Education (UAG Schulungen/Fortbildungen) of the DINI/Nestor Working Group Research Data (DINI/Nestor-AG Forschungsdaten). The newly published English version of the Train-the-Trainer Concept contains the translated concept, the materials, and all methods of the Train-the-Trainer Programme. Furthermore, additional English references and materials complement this version.
\nThis document is primarily intended for trainers who want to conduct a Train-the-Trainer workshop on research data management. It contains background knowledge on the PowerPoint slides and teaching scripts as well as further information on the individual subject areas required for reuse and implementation of a two-day workshop of seven and a half hours a day.

The rising tide of data management and sharing requirements from funding agencies, publishers, and institutions has created a new set of pressures for researchers who are already stretched for time and funds. While it can feel like yet another set of painful hurdles, in reality, the process of creating a Data Management Plan (DMP) can be a surprisingly useful exercise, especially when done early in a project’s lifecycle. Good data management practiced throughout one’s career, can save time, money, and frustration, while ultimately helping increase the impacts of research.
\r\nThis 1-day workshop will involve lecture and discussion around concepts of data management throughout the data lifecycle (from data creation, storage, and analysis to data sharing, archiving, and reusing), as well as related issues such as intellectual property, copyright, open access, data citation, attribution, and metrics. Participants will learn about data management best practices and useful tools while engaging in activities designed to produce a DMP similar to those desired by the NSF Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences Division (for example, Linguistics, Documenting Endangered Languages), as well as other federal agencies such as NEH.

\r\nData Champions are experts in data management who share their experience with their group/department members. They are volunteers that act as advocates for good data management and sharing practises and they help their Faculty’s Data Steward with disciplinary specific understandings of Research Data Management (RDM). The Data Champion programme started in September 2018 at the TU Delft and is open to researchers from all levels (PhD students to professors) as well as support staff (data managers, software developers and technicians). As the Data Champions are members of all faculties and various departments of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) they form a network across the university campus. The Champions are invited for meetings where they interact with each other and share their experiences, such as achievements and problems that they encounter in managing data and software. They are also encouraged to participate at a national and international level by being informed on current trends in data management and there is a travel grant available that allows them to participate in RDM events, trainings and workshops. At TU Delft they are actively working together with the Data Stewards on RDM policy development as well as involved in more practical activities such as coding support and Software Carpentry workshops. We all know of horror stories of people losing or deleting their entire dissertation just weeks prior to a deadline. Even before this happens, good practice in looking after research data from the beginning to the end of a project makes work and life a lot less stressful. Defined in the widest sense, digital data includes all files created or manipulated on a computer (text, images, spreadsheets, databases, etc). With publishing and archiving of research increasingly being online, we all have a responsibility to ensure the long-term preservation of our research data, while at same time being aware of issues of sensitive data, intellectual property rights, open access, and freedom of information. The DataTrain teaching materials have been designed to familiarise post-graduate students in good practice in looking after their research data. A central tenet is the importance of thinking about this in conjunction with the projected outputs and publication of research projects. This teaching package is focussed on data management for Social Anthropology.

\nFor each of three modules of the course, notes and powerpoint presentations are available as well a a survey model, a list of useful sofwrae, and a list os references and web-based resources as handouts.\u00a0 Topics include the process of fieldwork, the kinds of data collected, and the methods for their collection.\u00a0 Other topics relate to the organisation of data including basic information on file management, some practical demonstration of software tools and back-up techniques.\u00a0\u00a0
